Bodrum has always been a place for fun-loving folks, as artists and writers in their easy going Bohemian way of live.

The history of Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus or Halikarnas goes back to the 13th century B.C. According to the ancient Greek historian and geographer Herodotus, who was born in Halicarnassus, the town was founded by Dorian colonists in the 7th century B.C.

Sometimes in history Halicarnassus(Bodrum) probably destroyed by an earthquake and was plundered for building materials at the beginning of the 15th century,
by the Knights of Rhodes, who were constructing the Castle of St.Peter. Bodrum was incorporated into The OTTOMAN EMPIRE after the conquest of Rhodes by SULTAN SULEIMAN(Suleyman) THE MAGNIFICENT in 1523.

Picture on right shown variety of blue glass bids and combinations from this region. Some of them which has evil eye on, called NAZARLIK or/and NAZAR BONCUGU (Good Luck bid)

Bodrum peninsula also in history came under Persian rule by King XERXES. After king Mausolos's death(353 B.C.) Queen Artemisia became the leader of four regions in Asia Minor: Halicarnassus, Cos, Nisyrus, and Calyndus and the world's first recorded female naval commander. The Warrior Queen ARTEMISIA (she has ben named after the Goddess Artemis), had a magnificent tomb erected to her husband MAUSOLOS. Today unfortunately nothing remains of mausoleum. It was probably destroyed by an earthquake and was plundered for building materials for Castle of St.Peter. The site of the Mausoleum is outside of Bodrum, on the road to ORTAKENT and this tomb ranked among the seven wonders of the ancient world. Statues of MAUSOLOS and ARTEMISIA now in a museum in the UK.

Bodrum's main attraction is the Castle of St.Peter, which has great stone staircases and towers. Great medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes(1402 A.D.), still stand strongly at the see entrance of the city. The gardens are roamed by peacocks and strewn with amphorae, statues, mosaics and sarcophagi.

At the castle's courtyard you will get a magnificent view of the town and bay of Bodrum.

You can take a complete tour around the battlements and visit cafes, shops and ateliers where glass-blowers and potters show off their skills and sell their wares.
Bodrum is easily accessible by see to neighborly Greek islands and Marmaris. See ferries schedule

Other place of interest in Bodrum is The Museum of Marine Antiquities, which is located in Knight's Chapel and in several other buildings in the castle's courtyard.
